Another failed prophecy of £25m per annum pot of gold promised to Sir Alex Ferguson by Glazer, either that or there's £48.8m just lying around somewhere waiting to be spent on shoring up the midfield and forward line.

Or maybe, just maybe, that was another lie, originally Glazers own, but now heartily signed up to by Gill.

How much will Sir Alex Ferguson continue to be bought into the 'excellent' ownership of the Glazers, may come into question in the coming months.

With the transfer window now closed, the position is that the Club has bought Michael Carrick and got Tomasz Kuszczak in on loan.

Early announcements of world class midfielders being signed by the brace before the start of the world cup actually meant one who isn't an England regular being bought, although the expected engineered move of Ruud Van Nistelrooy did materialise.

More unexpected was, perhaps, having weakened the forward line, the non-arrival of a replacement, indeed the supposed answer that was already at the club, Rossi, was also loaned out.

Phil Bardsley, David Bellion, Chris Eagles, Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, Quinton Fortune, Ben Foster, Tim Howard, Eddie Johnson, Tommy Lee, Paul McShane, Lee Martin, Jon Obi Mikel, Liam Miller, Phil Picken, Gerard Pique, Giuseppe Rossi, Jonathan Spector, Luke Steele and Ruud Van Nistelrooy have all been sold, loaned out or otherwise removed from the salary bill.

This net loss of seventeen players comes on top of the 23 players sold, released or loaned out this time last year.

With Manchester United's first team squad now effectively reduced to just 18 outfield players, Adam Ekersley, Darren Gibson, Richie Jones and Floribert N'Galula look set to become first team regulars.

When the Glazers first took over the club in 2005 they explained that their financial forecasts were based on United qualifying for the Champion's League most years and reaching the quarter finals once every 3 or 4 years.
Eighteen months ago that sounded like caution.  This latest lack of investment shows that this is actually all the footballing success for Manchester United that they are prepared to pay for.
The saddest thing is, it was obvious all along what was going to happen.
To those who doubted it, maybe still do, admitting the scepticism surrounding the takeover was correct would be a good first step in helping those who never wanted to 'wait and see' get the job done, namely getting the odious owners of United out.
If the omens are anything to go by, the fight might be won quicker than we hoped.
